I'm Riding For

Jimmy

Jimmy

Jimmy was diagnosed with brain cancer in March 2006. Over the next nearly four years, he endured 15 brain surgeries, chemotherapy, and two rounds of six-week radiation treatments before he died on December 27, 2009, just two days after Christmas. His mother described him as “such a gentle soul,” someone who never asked why he was sick or questioned the cross he was given to carry. And somehow, through it all, gave the biggest hugs. What stayed with me was that, even while describing such a difficult journey, she also talked about the many blessings their family encountered along the way. That is why I ride. Jimmy should have been deciding what to study in college, spending time with friends, enjoying holidays with his family, dating, and planning the life ahead of him. Instead, he and his family were facing surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and a battle no young person should have to fight. I am riding in Jimmy's memory, for his family, and for every young person whose future has been interrupted by cancer. I ride because their stories matter, and because no family should have to face this fight alone.

My Story

13 Aug 2026

Wow. Seven years!

It’s hard to believe I’ve been doing the GCC for seven years.

What started as a way to stay active, get some use out of a bike I probably spent too much on, and escape a case of cabin fever has become something that means so much more to me. At first, I wanted to get out into the world in a safe way and figured if I was going to ride, I might as well do some good along the way.

Over the years, this challenge has taught me a lot about myself, about perseverance, pushing through difficult things, and continuing to show up. It has become important to me not just because of the riding, but because of what it has taught me. This year has brought some setbacks, and I know it’s going to be a challenging one. But that makes this year’s ride even more meaningful.

Cancer has affected so many people in my life. I lost both grandfathers to cancer, including one I never had the chance to meet. Other relatives and friends have also been affected.

It breaks my heart that children have to fight cancer when they should be growing up, playing, dreaming, and looking forward to their futures.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

This September, I’m once again taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids’ cancer!

More than 15,700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and sadly, 38 children die from cancer every week.

My challenge may be difficult this year, but what I face on the bike is nothing compared to what these kids and their families are going through. What matters most is raising money to help give these children a better chance at the futures they deserve.

I’m raising funds to support Children’s Cancer Research Fund and their work to develop lifesaving treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Please consider making a donation. Every contribution helps.

Seven years of riding. Seven years of learning. Seven years of hoping. And hopefully, one day, a cure.

Thank you for supporting me and these kids. ❤️🚴‍♂️

  • An emotional day!!!!
    14 Aug 2026

I spent some time today updating my page after creating my FB fundraiser yesterday, wondering if I'll be able to reach my $800 goal this year, let alone ride my 150 miles! Right now, both feel a little out of reach.

I am riding in memory of Jimmy this year, and his story had me in tears today. If you have a minute, give it a read on my page. I am so grateful for the opportunity to ride in his memory and to know a little bit more about what he and his family went through. I hope that, with your help, I can make even a small difference so that maybe other families won't have to go through what they did.

Then I happened to look a little closer at my page and realized that in one day, just one, I had received three donations! And in the middle of my rush to get ready for kickoff day, setting up my FB fundraiser at the last minute, and finally getting around to updating my page, I had even entered a cash donation under my own name by mistake. 😂

With my very late start, my donors show up for me. You continue to show up for me and for this cause. THANK YOU! There are no words.

When I fall short, you still show up.

I am getting a late start this year on the challenge. With a few setbacks, very hot/humid weather, and on-going foot pain, this year is starting uphill. 🫤 But what's new? Each of my years here has presented its own unique challenges, and the children I ride for are going through so much worse. They deserve my attention and commitment to doing everything I can to finish this so that they can finish their journeys successfully! So, here's to successfully completing journeys despite the obstacles! Please help me do it!
